What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the final permanent teeth to erupt or grow in sometime between the ages of 16 and 22. Although it’s certainly possible for them to come in normally, many do not, which can present problems for your oral health.

Ideally, wisdom teeth would grow into position with plenty of room and perfectly aligned. That’s doesn’t always happen. Your mouth may not have the space to accommodate wisdom teeth, potentially causing impaction, which is when the tooth is positioned at a sharp angle against the second molar. Although impaction may not present immediate symptoms, over time it can lead to pain, damage to other teeth, infection, and more susceptibility to tooth decay and gum disease. If your wisdom teeth do not erupt normally, it will likely be better for your long-term oral health to have them extracted.

During regular checkups, we often take digital X-rays to review your oral health underneath the surface. It is while reviewing these X-rays that one of our dentists identify your wisdom teeth and determine whether they will grow in properly. If we find that they need to be removed, we will schedule your procedure when it is convenient for you.

At Blackwell Dentistry, we are dedicated to ensuring the comfort of our patients. That’s why we offer several kinds of sedation, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, and can cater to your needs. Depending on your case, extracting your wisdom teeth could be as simple as pulling the tooth from its socket to a more complex surgical procedure. For surgery, we do our best to work efficiently and finish within one appointment, but there are cases when a second may be necessary.

What Happens After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

With any oral surgical procedure, it is important that you follow the specific instructions that we give you. However, here are some general guidelines for caring for the site after extraction:

  • Have someone, like a family member or friend, monitor your recovery.
  • Keep gauze over the sockets for the first two days after the procedure.
  • To help with swelling and inflammation in the cheeks and jaw line, use ice packs at 20-minute intervals for the first two days.
  • Get plenty of sleep and avoid rigorous activities for at least a few days.

Our team at Blackwell Dentistry is committed to helping your smile stay happy and healthy in the long term. If wisdom teeth extraction is necessary, we will do everything possible to make the process smooth, painless, and efficient. Schedule an appointment with us today!
