Fluoride Treatment – Blackwell, OK

Combatting Tooth Decay from the Start

At Blackwell Dentistry, our team of dentists takes pride in offering some of the best dental services that are designed to better protect you and your family’s oral health. Children often require additional help in combatting common dental problems, especially tooth decay, because their manual dexterity is not yet fully developed. This makes it difficult for them to effectively clean their teeth in a way that successfully removes plaque and tartar accumulations, putting them at risk for cavities. To combat this problem, we are pleased to offer fluoride treatments during their regular checkups. To speak to a dentist about this process or to schedule an appointment, contact our office today.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral that is used to combat tooth decay and strengthen enamel. It is found in water sources and most toothpaste brands, but should your little one require additional help, it can be applied manually during their regular dental checkup.

What Are the Benefits?

Because of the many benefits fluoride can provide to both children and adults, most municipal water supplies incorporate it so that it will aid in the development of healthy teeth by preventing tooth decay. It also:

Protects the outermost layer of the tooth (enamel), helping to strengthen it and prevent damage or injury
Fights off harmful plaque and tartar that can lead to tooth decay
Serves as a beneficial solution for individuals prone to cavity formation (children)
Is quick to apply and completely painless
Requires no additional appointments, as it can be applied during a regular visit

How Does Treatment Work?

Once your child’s teeth are fully cleaned, and a children’s dentist has examined their smile, you can request that a fluoride treatment be administered before leaving.

During this process, which takes only a few minutes, our team will use a small brush applicator to apply the fluoride to the surfaces of your child’s teeth. Allowing the topical application to dry, you and your child will be cleared to leave and resume normal activity.

Aftercare Instructions

After your child receives a fluoride treatment, you will need to make sure their teeth and gums remain healthy at home, in-between appointment. Just because this extra varnish is applied doesn’t mean it will not wear off with time.

A few things you can do to make sure tooth decay remains at bay include:

Observe and/or help your child brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste as well as floss at least once before bed and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash
Limit their sugar consumption, as this can quickly cause cavities to develop
Schedule their next appointment before you leave our office
